The books won’t be out until November 22, but the cover images for the Virago Modern Classics editions of High Rising and Wild Strawberries by Angela Thirkell have been released and don’t they look gorgeous? Wild Strawberries holds a particularly special place in my heart as it served as my introduction to both Thirkell and Barsetshire.
Oh, these look lovely! I hadn’t heard of Thirkell before, but I am definitely interested. Thanks for the heads up.
Oh goody, a new person to preach the wonders of Thirkell at! Truly Iris, it is remarkable that you’ve been able to ignore my ramblings about her over the past two years. Others can only wish they were so lucky. These are the first two books in her ridiculously long Barsetshire series so they’re the perfect place to start, if you’re at all interested.
These are so, so pretty! I need to put them in my shopping cart right now.
I am restraining myself from placing a pre-order but only because I know Christmas is coming; these are already at the top of my list.
I’m really looking forward to reading Wld Strawberries again. I have a feeling I didn’t do it justice the first time around.
I love the covers, but does High Rising take place in the winter? I’ll have to check.
Part of why I’m so excited about the reissue is because I know it means more bloggers will be reading and talking about Thirkell! It won’t just be you and me any more!
I have a copy of High Rising on my shelves but I haven’t read it yet so I have no idea when it takes place. But, given how pretty that cover is, I wonder if I care?
I didn’t realize that you haven’t read High Rising! don’t wait for the new edition 🙂 You’re missing Tony & Laura Morland.
I know! I’m really looking forward to it, but I’m saving it. I am planning to read it in December as one of my last books for “My Century of Books”.
Gorgeous covers!
Aren’t they just?!
I have read many (but not all) of Angela Thirkell’s books, but the only one that I own is “Wild Strawberries” and, imho, it is the best one.
Of the ones I’ve read so far, it definitely ranks in my top five!
Alexander McCall Smith introducing Angela Thirkell? Can’t wait!!
I know! I already own copies of both books but I will definitely be adding these to my collection, both for the stunning covers and because I’m excited to read what he has to say in those introductions.
To think that I parted company with a whole clutch of Thirkell novels in lovely old mint edition orange Penguins … unread, of course! I love the covers, they’re enough to tempt me!
I think these are probably the nicest covers Thirkell’s books have ever had!
I’ve never heard of Thirkell, but you have me interested and these covers are beautiful!
I am so pleased that the books are being reissued and will be readily available for new readers to discover Thirkell!
These look gorgeous, Claire! Now I have noticed your love of Angela over the last couple of years…and been convinced by your enthusiasm…but have been afraid to try one of her books as they seem to be part of a series and I don’t know where to start. Are these two issues part of a series or are they stand alone? They are so very pretty that I am incredibly tempted!
These two are the first in the series – a perfect place to start!
These are going on the Christmas list! I’ve been hunting the used book stores for Thirkell ever since you started talking about her – so nice to be able to readily acquire some. And I love that they are the first in the series…so helpful for those of us who don’t like to “jump into the middle.” 🙂
I think my real Christmas present this year is going to be getting to read other bloggers’ thoughts on Thirkell as more and more discover her through these VMC editions! Now let’s just hope they end up reissuing the later books too!
Wild Strawberries was also my first Thirkell, nearly 30 years ago. I ordered the two new Virago versions as I have the 30 year old copies of both Wild Strawberries and High Rising. Can’t wait to read Alexander McCall Smith’s intro!
Wild Strawberries is clearly a wonderful place to start! I’m also really looking forward to hearing what AMC has to say about Thirkell.
Wow. I love those covers. I really need to resume my Barsetshire reading.
VMC has been coming out with some great covers lately and I think these are the best of the bunch!
