While it looks like Pomfret Towers will be the only Angela Thirkell title Virago is publishing in 2013, there is exciting news for 2014: according to The Bookseller, The Brandons, Summer Half, and August Folly are set to be released in summer 2014. These three titles are all perfect summer reading and Summer Half is one of my favourite books in the entire series. Wonderful, wonderful news!
Another Angela Thirkell Update
January 29, 2013 by Claire (The Captive Reader)
Fab news, I have been reading Thirkell’s Barsetshire novels in order and obtaining them through our library’s inter-library loan (ILL). I didn’t want to wait until Virago published them. (Not that I am impatient or anything.) Just happy to hear that others will be able to read her stuff as well….
Thirkell’s books can be very difficult to track down so this is great news for anyone interested in her Barsetshire! I know I had quite the headache trying to find the books through my library, ILL, and the university library.
Claire- and all the other Thirkell fans out there – would you like to join the Angela Thirkell Society in North America? You clearly are a Thirkellite! We publish journals (English and American versions) several times a year as well as other Thirkell-related books and meet every other year with fabulous speakers. Check out the website at http://www.angelathirkell.org. Membership is all of $15US per year. A bargain!
Thanks for the info, Susan!
Such good news that More Thirkell titles will be available! I think I’ve said before – probably more than once – that The Brandons is my favorite of Thirkell’s books, and also the first I read. I’m also very fond of Summer Half, with all its wonderful characters, including of course Lydia (who does make quite an appearance in The Brandons). August Folly, on the other hand, doesn’t rank as high, I think because I feel sorry for yet exasperated with the Tebbens.
Isn’t it wonderful news? I remember you saying that The Brandons is your favourite but for some reason I have never warmed to that family, even to Lavinia!
I’ve wanted to read Thirkell for a while now…I will have to find one of her books to read soon. I love the new Viragos that were published last year, but they are hard to find copies of.
The new Virago editions are readily available on Book Depository, which has free world-wide shipping, for under $14 each. Hope that helps!
